A home for visual arts and music, named after artist Ofra Zimbalista, located
in southeastern Tel Aviv, a developing hub for artists in diverse fields
The gallery complex spans several spaces: an open-air sculpture garden, exhibition halls, and a video room,
aiming to function as a venue for intimate encounters and dialogue between artists and colleagues in creation, with a focus
on sustainable interactions between artists from various disciplines — musicians, writers, and visual artists —
and art lovers, as well as between art and the community in which it is created.
In addition to changing exhibitions, the gallery will host multicultural music performances, accentuating connections
and collaborations between artists from diverse fields. Given its location near the Shapira and Neve Sha'anan neighborhoods, the gallery will also serve as a platform for musicians from a wide range of communities.
The gallery was established through the initiative of musician Chen Zimbalista, founder of the Zimbalista Music Factory
non-profit organization and the Voice of Peace (VoP) project.
In its inaugural year, Zimbalista Gallery will present three unique exhibitions of selected works from the artist's collection. Each exhibition will unveil a different cross-section from Zimbalista's extensive oeuvre, showcasing a unique aspect of her signature approach, which set her apart in the local art field.
The first exhibition, "Studio Ofra"
Opened on November 28, 2024, featuring a broad range of Zimbalista's works exploring the worlds of music, theater, circus, and performance, while highlighting the dynamic quality of her artistic practice and the varied techniques she employed.
The second exhibition
Will present, for the first time, unique collaborations between Zimbalista and two leading poets: Yona Wallach and Agi Mishol. It will provide a glimpse into the artistic dialogue between these artists, illuminating how their personal and creative connections influenced their respective practices. The intersection of visual art and multidisciplinary work with poetry, a hallmark of Zimbalista's practice, was an inspiration for the gallery's founding.
The third exhibition
Will offer a fresh, contemporary take on Zimbalista's art, concentrating on works that confront existential questions, human suffering, and instances of unresolved tension.
In its second year, the gallery will expand its programming to host exhibitions featuring a blend of prominent local artists, emerging talents, and international artists. The gallery will offer a platform for collaborative projects involving visual and sound artists, video creators, and musicians.
Ofra Zimbalista's (1939-2014) success was not measured solely by the scope of the museum exhibitions she staged, but rather by the abundance of her sculptures installed in various public spaces across Israel and the world, which became etched in collective memory.
Zimbalista's "ensembles" brought together women, men, and children of varying ages, sometimes in large-scale, multi-participant spectacles, and other times in more intimate "solo" performances. The stages varied as well, from closed interiors and old castles to shopping malls, gas stations, playgrounds, and parks. Beyond the sculptures themselves, Zimbalista's genius lay in their installation on these diverse stages. Through her spatial arrangements, she orchestrated ever-changing choreographies, rooted in a keen spatial awareness and the meticulous planning of each figure’s placement, a hallmark of her practice.
